Tips and Tricks on Cultivating a Window Herb Garden

Who wouldn’t want a home garden? Imagine, not having to buy flavor herbs anymore now that you intend on having them to adorn your garden. But are you afraid of having to check on them 24/7? Growing herbs indoors may seem like a daunting and tedious task, but in reality though, it isn’t.

You do need to consider some things though.

A sunny location should be the main consideration. Your window herb garden would need an ample amount of sunlight, say about 8 hours of light – which is why a window sill will usually be perfect for the job. However, some cases can only assure you of less than 8 hours; to augment the discrepancy, you can buy a mini grow light to help in giving the necessary heat to your plants.

It is recommended to use 2 parts of potting soil, a teaspoon of lime and 1 part of sand as your planting soil as it contains nutrients which would definitely be beneficial to your plants, herb or otherwise. Also, your containers should have the proper drainage. Punch some holes at the bottom of the can (or whatever container you may have) and put a small amount of gravel and pebbles before putting your soil. This will help in letting the plant have sufficient air and will lessen the chances of drowning the herb plant in too much water.

Speaking of water, proper watering of your herbs is also essential for successful herb growth. Most herbs do not like to have their leaves wet for a prolonged period of time (basil is one such example), so to be sure, always start watering from the bottom, and not from the top of the plant. Some may require once-a-week waterings while others may need everyday intake

Choose your seeds and seedlings wisely. Sometimes, it is better to buy seedlings than seeds, but this will be based on your preference, not mine. If you want to start from scratch (which is usually the best way to learn the essentials of home gardening), always make sure and check for your seed’s expiry date. (Yes, seeds get old, too.) The most commonly planted herbs are basil, mint, thyme, oregano, chives and rosemary, but you can opt to choose what you want.

Herb gardening can be fun, especially if you’re trying to sport a green thumb. With the proper guidance, love and care, your herb garden would be sprouting out in no time.
