Road warriors have settled largely on notebooks with 13.3-inch LCDs, which tend to deliver the best balance of portability and screen size. But if you could get a 14.1-inch display in a notebook with the same dimensions and weight as a 13.3-inch model, would you jump at it? That’s what Fujitsu delivers in its LifeBook S6520. It’s one of the most portable 14.1-inch laptops we’ve seen, and it delivers most of the features a business user would need. vgp-bps10.

If you like your laptop of vgp-bpl8 to wear basic black, the S6520 will suit you just fine. The matte-finish chassis has touches of glossy black and silver-gray trim, but the design goal here was certainly to blend in, not stand out. While the system’s looks aren’t thrilling, its form factor is. Weighing 4.0 pounds—and just 3.7 pounds if you swap out the optical drive for a weight saver—the S6520 is among the lightest 14.1-inch notebooks available. By comparison, the classicweighs 5.2 pounds when equipped with the same size screen. The S6520’s dimensions are also impressively small for the class; at 12.4 x 9.2 inches, its footprint is smaller than the ThinkPad T’s (13.2 x 9.3) and similar to that of many 13.3-inch notebooks. Flip the lid to see why: Fujitsuengineers have shaved as much width as possible from the sides of the screen’s bezel, so the LED-backlit widescreen LCD comes within millimeters of the edges. But there’s still room in the trimmed-down chassis for a full-size keyboard, done in an attractive winter white and set in a silver surround. The pebbled surface of has little friction while providing good tactile feedback, though we wish it were a touch larger. The 1280 x 800 glossy screen delivered crisp text and wide viewing angles, along with plenty of. It also handled video well, exhibiting very little motion blur and good reproduction of dark scenes in our Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl DVD. JAWS for Windows is a software program for visually impaired computer users produced by Freedom Scientific in Florida, USA.

JAWS for Windows allows visually impaired people to use any of the applications on a computer by converting the text displayed on a screen, into speech or, to a refreshable Braille display.

JAWS for Windows was originally called JAWS (Job Access With Speech). JAWS Version 1.0 was released in 1989 by Ted Henter, a former motorcycle racer who lost his sight in a 1978 car accident.

In 1985, Henter along with Bill Joyce, founded the Henter-Joyce Corporation in St. Petersburg, Florida. Joyce sold his interest in the company back to Ted Henter sometime in 1990.

JAWS was created for computer users who used the DOS (Disk Operated System). A unique feature of the JAWS program, was its use of cascading menus in the style of the popular Lotus 1-2-3 application.

A significant distinction of JAWS to that of other screen readers of that era, was its use of macros. Macros allowed users to customise the user interface and so work better with numerous computer applications.

Ted Henter and Rex Skipper wrote the original JAWS code in the mid-1980s, releasing version 2.0 in 1990. When Skipper left the company, Charles Oppermann was hired to maintain and improve the JAWS program.

Oppermann and Henter continually added minor and major features and frequently released new versions of JAWS. Freedom Scientific now offer JAWS for MS-DOS as a freeware download from their web site.

In the early 1990s, Microsoft Windows became more popular and Oppermann started to design a new version of JAWS. A principle design goal was to maintain the natural user interface of Windows and to continue to provide a strong macro facility. It was around this time that JAWS was renamed JAWS for Windows (JFW) and Beta versions of JAWS for Windows went on show and were demonstrated at many conferences throughout 1993 and 1994.

During this time developer Glen Gordon started working on the JAWS for Windows code, ultimately taking over its development when Oppermann was hired by Microsoft in November of 1994 and in January 1995, JAWS for Windows 1.0 was released.

In April 2000, Henter-Joyce, Blazie Engineering, and Arkenstone, Inc. all merged together to form Freedom Scientific.

Have a focal point and a strong key message that communicates a significant benefit to your prospect. Opt for large graphics rather than reams of copy. Create an experience that allows visitors use as many of their senses as possible. The following are just a few ideas to help you get ready for that all important trade show.1)If space will allow, erect a stand-alone presentation board. On the board, you can show how clients can benefit by using your services. Be creative and make it stand out. Include pictures, if possible, and be sure your company name and logo are more than obvious. 2)If there is wall space, but your budget is minimal, use your trusty desktop publishing software to create a template of your company name. Use the template, along with bristle board, cardboard, or foam core to make a sign that you can put up on the wall behind your booth. 3)Arrange your table in levels. Put the larger items at the rear, shorter items in front of those, and even shorter items in front of those. 4)Develop a PowerPoint presentation to display on your table (if an electrical outlet is within reach of your booth). You can make it on your desktop computer and transfer it to a laptop, which you can rent or borrow if you don’t already have one. Your visitors will find this visually appealing and will draw in their attention. 5)Have a portfolio of your work available. Print off some of your best projects, put them into plastic sheet protectors, and arrange them in a binder. Then lay out the binder where visitors can flip through the pages. 6)Have plenty of giveaways, such as business cards, brochures, pens, magnets, and anything else that has your company name and/or logo on it. Most people who attend trade shows are expecting to take home some goodies. And, be sure to use display racks for showing your flyers, specials, brochures, and such.7)Offer Gift Certificates for some of your services. There’s nothing better than getting a deal and, when they ‘cash in’ their certificate, they will see how valuable your services are and will come back for more. 8)Have a draw for a prize. Offer a prize that, in some way, compliments your business if possible, and appeals to anyone. Have visitors and entrants sign a guestbook, fill in a ticket, or drop their business cards into a fish bowl or gift bag. You can then use this information at a later date to make a follow up contact. 9)If the show will be on for an extended length of time, be sure to have assistance in manning your booth so you can take a break. If you don’t have the option of having someone take over for a bit, be sure to put up a note that tells people how long you will be gone or when you will be back. Most importantly, be friendly and inviting. Say hi to those that turn and look toward you or your booth. Strike up a conversation and be sure to have a short introductory speech ready. And…have fun!

The Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 5000 is an impressive package. As the name hints, both the keyboard and mouse are wireless, and therefore require 2xAA batteries each. Usually we despise the use of non-rechargeable batteries but Microsoft has repeatedly proven that you just need a device that uses its power efficiently.

Microsoft happily announces on the box that estimated battery life is six months, and from our previous experience with Microsoft Wireless products we can firmly believe that claim.

The keyboard is a dream to type on; caviar for the fingertips. It’s adorned with multimedia keys and keys that allow you to access the essentials such as documents, pictures, Internet browser, email client, multimedia application and even a Windows Live call button.

The keyboard, of course, comes with Microsoft’s standard Enhanced F Keys, and to help with the usual chores such as cut, copy and paste, Microsoft has labeled the shortcut keys and clearly indicates that Ctrl needs to be pushed. The keyboard features the best palm rest that we have ever used; fake leather and padding – nice.

The mouse is a dream to move around. It glides effortlessly on both table tops and high-end mouse pads alike. The 1000dpi laser is precise and the buttons are responsive. The four axis tilt smooth scroll wheel is a pleasure to use. There is, however, one issue we had with the mouse. The button on the right-hand side is in the way.

By default it is set to be a shortcut to a magnification screen, but because of where it is placed your finger will end up hitting it often, very often. So a quick deactivation of this button is essential to your sanity, unless you are partially blind. It even proved to be a very capable gaming mouse, although more hard-core gamers will laugh at this.
